Red Deer Lake will be alive with the sound of music in 2013 as the inaugural concert series ?On the Edge? kicks off in 2013.
The Red Deer Lake United Church announced it will be hosting an annual concert series showcasing impressive local talent. The inaugural ?On the Edge? series will include three shows beginning Jan. 19 with a performance from Rhythm of the Rockies.
Wendy Johnson, a member of the series? board of directors, said the concert program evolved as a result of the church hosting a number of musical events over the years.
?We have such a nice facility we thought why not use it,? said Johnson. ?There were several of us who thought a concert series was worth trying.?
In developing the program Johnson said they enlisted the advice of those who have already been successful such as the organizers of the Beneath the Arch Concert Series held annually in Turner Valley.
In addition, several of the directors have ties to the music industry which has made securing performers somewhat easier.
However, the goal of the concert series is to offer another community program which may help fund projects at the Red Deer United Church and beyond.
?We want this to be more of a community event and if it raises funds some may go to the church and some to various outreach projects,? said Johnson. ?It is more to get the community involved and to let them know (the church) is there for many things.?
?On the Edge? has put together a strong line-up for its inaugural campaign including renowned singer-songwriter Eli Barsi, foothills cowboy poet Doris Daley, The Prairie Mountain Fiddlers and The Rhythm of the Rockies will kick things off on Jan. 19.
The Rhythm of the Rockies is a Calgary women?s choir which is familiar with the Red Deer Lake United Church having performed there in the past to a sold out audience.
?They are quite an amazing group of singers,? said Johnson who has heard them before. ?They sold out here before and we wanted to bring them back. They said they really enjoyed the ambiance of the church.?
Indeed the choir is eager to return to Red Deer Lake as well.
Shannon Neumann, a member of the choir, said they are looking forward to their return engagement at Red Deer Lake.
What makes the award-winning choir unique is it has 60 members singing four-part a capella harmony; there is no musical accompaniment.
?Our motto is ordinary voices making extraordinary music,? said Neumann. ?We are a very energetic and modern style of performance. We engage with the audience because we are just human voices and they really connect with the music they are hearing.?
Wilson said the Red Deer Lake United Church is an excellent venue for the performers and the audience. The church can hold up to 350 people and the building?s great acoustics, sloped floor and open space provides an outstanding musical experience.
There is outstanding potential for ?On the Edge? because of the amenities at the church and the commitment of the music series? directors means and that is not lost on the organizers.
?What we have really tried to do is have people come out and enjoy themselves,? said Wilson.
?On the Edge? will not be a one hit wonder either as Wilson said the committee is already booking performers for the second season.
This year?s series will include Rhythm of the Rockies on Jan. 19, The Prairie Mountain Fiddlers on March 8 and Eli Barsi and Doris Daley on May 10.
