Ancient Syrian market set on fire by fighting

Shaam News Network via AP

In this image taken from video obtained from Shaam News Network, which has been authenticated based on its contents and other AP reporting, a fire rages at the medieval market in Aleppo, Syria.

By NBC News and wire services

Hundreds of shops in the ancient covered market in Aleppo, Syria, were burning Saturday as fighting between rebels and state forces in Syria's largest city threatened to destroy the U.N. World Heritage Site.?

Activists speaking via Skype said army snipers were making it difficult to approach the Souk al-Madina, the medieval market of vaulted stone alleyways and carved wooden facades in the Old City, once a major tourist attraction, Reuters reported.

Activists said the fire might have been started by shelling and gunfire, and estimated that between 700 and 1,000 shops had been destroyed so far. The accounts were difficult to verify because of government restrictions on foreign media.

Aleppo's Old City is one of several locations in Syria declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, the United Nations cultural agency.

UNESCO believes five of Syria's six World Heritage ?Sites -- which include the ancient desert city of Palmyra, the Crac des Chevaliers crusader fortress, and parts of old Damascus -- have been affected by the fighting.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Syrian forces and rebels blamed each other for the blaze.

The uprising-turned-civil war has killed more than 30,000 people, according to activist groups.?

Rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday announced a new offensive in Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub of 2.5 million people, but neither side has appeared to make significant gains.?

The Syrian conflict grinds on. Cities are under attack leaving them crushed by heavy shelling. NBC's Bill Neely reports.

Text messages attributed to the army were sent to all Syrian mobile phones when the offensive was announced.

"To those who have implicated themselves against the state: Those who have offered you money have left you with two options: You will be killed fighting the state or it will kill you to get rid of you," one message read.?"The state is more merciful than you. Think and decide. The Syrian Army."?

Activists also reported heavy clashes at Bab Antakya, a stone gateway to Aleppo's Old City, which sits on ancient trade routes and survived a parade of rulers throughout its construction between the 12th and 17th centuries.?

"No one is actually making gains here, it is just fighting and more fighting, and terrified people are fleeing," said an activist contacted by telephone who declined to be identified.?

He said in some districts bodies were lying in the streets and residents would not collect them, fearing snipers.

By noon on Saturday, more than 40 people had been killed in fighting across Syria, according to the Observatory.

Syria's military deadlock is also reflected diplomatically, with foreign powers stalemated over how to act. Western states and Gulf Arab countries back the opposition but most seem reluctant to interfere, while Russia, China and Iran back Assad.

The revolt, which began in March 2011 as peaceful protests, has become an armed insurgency, with rebels holding ground in Aleppo and rural towns of northern Syria.

The fighting has crept closer to Syria's border zones, and some bullets and rockets have hit neighboring Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. Ankara warned it would take action if its territory was again hit -- a mortar bomb hit a town on its southeastern frontier on Friday.

Activists reported fresh clashes in the capital Damascus and its suburbs and said security forces were torching homes as helicopters buzzed overhead.?

The bloodied bodies of at least 12 men were found in Damascus's northwestern suburb of Qudsaya. A video published by showed rows of men, some of them apparently shot, laid in a room whose walls were spattered with blood.

Some Damascus residents have accused government forces of summary executions in rebel districts.

Clonal evolution in maxillary sinus carcinoma

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Knowing how tumors evolve can lead to new treatments that could help prevent cancer from recurring, according to a study published September 29 by the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and Scottsdale Healthcare.

TGen researchers tracked several years of tumor evolution in a 47-year-old male patient with maxillary sinus carcinoma (MSC), a rare cancer of the sinus cavities beneath the cheeks that often requires surgical removal that is disfiguring. Fewer than half of MSC patients live more than 5 years after diagnosis.

"The ability to characterize clonal evolution of this rare cancer and identify its Achilles' heel can significantly impact treatment, leading to more personalized medicine," according to the study published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Clonal evolution refers to the often-rapid genetic changes that occur in cancer cells, which continually mutate and, thus, frequently resist anti-cancer drug compounds intended to destroy them.

"If we can understand the genomic basis of how this cancer evolves, perhaps we can find new treatments that could help improve the longevity and quality of life for patients," said Dr. Glen Weiss, Clinical Associate Professor at TGen, and Director of Thoracic Oncology at Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center Clinical Trials at Scottsdale Healthcare, a partnership with TGen. Dr. Weiss is one of the study's senior co-authors.

MSC represents nearly four of every five cases of paranasal sinus cancers, which grow rapidly and invade nearby tissues but also are usually slow to spread to distant sites. Patients usually die from a local recurrence of the tumor, even after aggressive treatment.

"This is the first report to study the clonal population of MSC arising in longitudinal samples from the same patient," the study said. "One of the aims of this study was to closely follow disease progression and the clonally evolving metastases for molecular profiling and accumulation of data for future use in development of personalized treatment."

The patient in the study received conventional treatment, which included surgical removal of his tumors, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and participation in a clinical trial.

Over time, however, the cancer spread to his upper right lung, lower left lung, left kidney, brain and part of his intestine. He eventually was hospitalized, received hospice care and prior to passing away gave permission to have his cancer studied after death in a rapid autopsy research program.

"Because his cancer resumed growth despite several courses of systemic chemotherapy and radiation therapy, we speculated that acquired secondary genetic changes evolved with the evolution of resistance to these therapies," said Dr. Michael Barrett, Associate Professor in TGen's Clinical Translational Research Division, and the study's other senior co-author.

Analysis of his tumors following surgeries, biopsies and autopsy revealed several genetic aberrations, including multiple copies of a region on chromosome 4q, which includes the KIT gene. KIT is an oncogene, a gene with the potential to cause cancer, and is a potential treatment target.

The authors suggest the results provide a unique description of how the drug resistant cancer cells replicate and progress to metastatic MSC. Additional findings included the loss of the gene PKP4, which is associated with increased tumor size.

"These results show that molecular analyses of patient samples can add to the information about the tumor and help us in tracking back the progression of the disease," the authors concluded. "Identification of selected genetic changes, and the biological processes they regulate arising in primary MSC tumors, will advance individualizing therapy and improve the outcome of patients with rare cancers."

"These kinds of cutting-edge studies are made possible through the collaboration of major research and clinical practices, such as the partnership between TGen and Scottsdale Healthcare," said Dr. Mark Slater, Vice President of Research at Scottsdale Healthcare.

The authors remain particularly grateful to the patient and his family for their contribution to understanding more about this type of cancer and hope this dissemination of knowledge may help others.

Scottsdale Healthcare, Scottsdale Medical Imaging, and Sun Health Research Institute at Banner Healthcare contributed to this study, which was funded by the IBIS Foundation of Arizona and by the Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation.

(AP) ? A firefight broke out between U.S. forces and their Afghan army allies in eastern Afghanistan Sunday, killing two Americans and three Afghan soldiers and pushing the number of U.S. troops killed in the long-running war 2,000.

The fighting started Saturday when what is believed to have been a mortar fired by insurgents struck a checkpoint set up by U.S. forces in Wardak province, said Shahidullah Shahid, a provincial government spokesman. He said the Americans thought they were under attack from a nearby Afghan army checkpoint and fired on it, prompting the Afghan soldiers to return fire.

The Afghan Defense Ministry said the gunbattle was the result of a "misunderstanding" between international forces and Afghan soldiers manning a checkpoint in the Sayd Abad district.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force, commonly referred to as ISAF, provided a different account.

"After a short conversation took place between (Afghan army) and ISAF personnel firing occurred which resulted in the fatal wounding of an ISAF soldier and the death of his civilian colleague," the coalition said in a statement. It said the three Afghan soldiers died "in an ensuing exchange of fire."

NATO did not say whether it considered this an "insider" attack on foreign forces by Afghan allies.

There has been rising tide of such attacks in which Afghan soldiers or police assault their international allies. The killings pose one of the greatest threats to NATO's mission in the country, endangering a partnership key to training up Afghan security forces and withdrawing international troops.

While it may be days before it becomes clear who fired on whom first, the incident illustrates how tense relations have become between international troops and their Afghan allies.

Officials on both sides went into damage control mode, arguing that Saturday's violence did not mark a new low in Afghan-U.S. relations and urging patience while investigators tried to figure out exactly what had happened.

The deputy commander of NATO's military force in Afghanistan, British Lt. Gen. Adrian Bradshaw, called a last-minute news conference in Kabul to address the incident, even though he had few details to give.

He said the initial report of an insider attack should be amended to note that the incident "is now understood possibly to have involved insurgent fire," and tried to stress that relations between international troops and their Afghan allies "are very strong and very effective."

A spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry, Gen. Zahir Azimi, also sought to downplay the incident.

"In a misunderstanding shooting broke out between Afghan army and ISAF forces. As a result of the shooting, three army soldiers were killed, three other soldiers were wounded and number of ISAF forces were killed and wounded," Azimi said in a statement.

One U.S. official confirmed that the service member killed was American, while another confirmed that the civilian was also American. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the nationality of the dead had not yet been formally announced.

The number of American military dead reflects an Associated Press count of those members of the armed services killed inside Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion on Oct. 7, 2001.

In the south meanwhile, three Afghan police officers were killed when insurgents attacked a checkpoint in Helmand province Sunday morning, provincial police spokesman Fareed Ahmad said.

US says may squash tomato trade deal with Mexico

(AP) ? The Commerce Department on Thursday indicated it may side with Florida tomato growers and squash a 16-year-old trade agreement with Mexico.

The move would allow U.S. growers to seek anti-dumping duties on imports of fresh tomatoes from Mexico. Tomato growers in Florida have sought to have the agreement ended, arguing that it is outdated and that Mexican imports are crippling the domestic industry.

Mexico's government says such a move would damage its trade relations with the United States, its partner in the North American Free Trade Agreement. It said the country's trade in tomatoes with the United States was worth over $1.8 billion in 2011.

The Commerce Department said it will make a final determination on the future of the tomato agreement in no later than 270 days.

Mexican tomato growers had sought a meeting last month to find a "mutually satisfactory" solution to the tomato issue, the country's Economy Department said Thursday.

"The Economy Department expresses its deep concern over the negative impact this preliminary decision could have on our bilateral trade relationship."

It noted that ending the agreement would lead to higher prices for U.S. consumers.

The decision is "inconsistent with the position expressed in the past, that the agreement is in the (U.S.) public interest."

This is the carbon fiber core of Ferrari's first hybrid

Ferrari has already said that it will never make an electric car -- at least, not while Luca di Montezemolo is in charge -- but we already know that a hybrid Ferrari is in the cards. And, this is what will hold it all together. At this year's Paris Auto Show the company rolled out this carbon fiber cage that is the core chassis of the machine. Other than a pledge that the thing will use F1-inspired technology nobody would tell us what it would be called (possibly F70, at least internally) or just when the rest of its components will be bolted on. But, for now, enjoy this sneak peek under the skin of Ferrari's next hypercar.

Camera-equipped helmet gives you superhuman vision

15 hrs.

If you think of high dynamic range imaging, or HDR, you probably think of crazy panoramic?cityscapes or lighthouses where everything pops with impossible clarity ? imagine seeing the whole world that way.?These goggles let you look at everything in real-time 3-D HDR?? and it's more useful than you might think.

The HDRchitecture?project, by researchers at the University of Toronto, was presented earlier this month at the SIGGRAPH imaging convention in Los Angeles.

The most dramatic application the team could think of for showing off the capabilities of their system was welding, where the light from the torch is so bright that it can blind the welder if he doesn't wear a?leaded-glass visor. Unfortunately, this renders the rest of the world, including his immediate surroundings, quite dark. What if you could combine the two images ? the dark one that shows the torch clearly, and the light one that shows everything else?

Think of high dynamic range as wearing night-vision goggles and sunglasses at the same time, with none of the downsides.?You can see?highlights and shadows that would be blown out or too dark to see otherwise.?

To achieve this,?the team's?EyeTap helmet uses a pair of cameras?take?multiple exposures of the same view and combine them in real time, in such a way that no part is too dark and no part is?too light.?

As you can see in the video, that means that the welder can clearly see not only the super-bright torch, but the hot metal it's touching and the rest of the object as well. This could greatly improve not just the quality of the welder's work, but the safety of his workshop.

The video below demonstrates the futuristic-looking helmet in a few situations; there's a good comparison at 1:45, and more everyday situations towards the end.

It's not just for welders. If the technology were developed, a driver would never be blinded by the glare of the sun, and a soldier would never miss a mine hiding in a shadow. The possibilities are really very exciting.

Of course, the device itself will have to be adapted somewhat before you can wear it in the car; it's clearly a bit bulky at the moment. But this "mediated reality," as the narrator describes it, is potentially very powerful. More information and much supporting documentation can be found at the EyeTap site, or at Road to VR.

TVs overtake PCs for home online video viewing | Advanced ...

The home installation of millions of Internet-connected TVs is changing the way that consumers access and view streaming video, according to market research company The NPD Group.

Findings from the firm?s Digital Video Outlook indicate that over the past year, the number of consumers reporting that the TV is their primary screen for viewing paid and free video streamed from the Web has risen from 33 per cent to 45 per cent. During the same period, consumers who used a PC as the primary screen for viewing over-the-top (OTT) streamed-video content declined from 48 per cent to 31 per cent. This shift not only reflects a strong consumer preference for watching TV and movies on big screen TVs, but also coincides with the rapid adoption of Internet-connectible TVs.

The report also reveals that home installation of millions of Internet-connected TVs is changing the way that consumers access and view streaming video. As of the second quarter (Q2) of 2012, 12 percent of the installed base of consumer TVs in the US were connected TVs, totalling more than 29 million devices. Approximately 10 per cent of US consumer households currently own at least one connected TV. NPD research conducted over the past year has found that 43 per cent of connected TV users accessed online entertainment directly from their TVs, including online video, music, and cloud services.

?The growth in connected TVs is another sign that online video is maturing,? said Russ Crupnick, senior vice president of industry analysis for The NPD Group. ?Streaming video has moved from the dorm room to the living room; and, as more households obtain and connect TVs to the Web, we predict increased trial and engagement for video distribution services.?

The report found that Netflix Watch Instantly is the dominant application for Web-to-TV video. Of those viewing online video on the TV, 40 per cent use their connected TVs to stream video via Netflix, 12 per cent access HuluPlus, and 4 per cent connect to Vudu. Connected TVs, which offer direct access to these and other popular online video services via TV apps, represent a convenient alternative to PCs, or the use of other Internet-connected peripheral devices, notes The NPD Group.

NPD?s study also found that nearly one in five connected-TV installations resulted in consumers no longer using peripheral devices, such as streaming media players, video game consoles, and Blu-ray Disc players, to access streaming video on the TV. This decline in usage could impact the usage models and utility of peripheral devices, says the firm.

Lawyer Identity Theft

You might think if anyone knows about the threat of identity theft and the steps needed to avoid it, it would be a lawyer. These people spend a living dealing with criminals. However, as a recent article in the Florida Bar News illustrates, attorneys are just as much at risk as anyone else. Florida lawyer Laurie Moss recently reported that she provided thieves with her personal information when providing it for what she thought was a background check for a law firm position in California.

When she showed up to report for her first day at the firm, she found out that the California lawyers did not exist. She does not know who ended up with her Social Security number, driver?s license number and other information. She also fears that whoever it is knows that she is an attorney and the thieves may try to practice law in her name.

One of the mistakes that Moss made was providing her personal information to a placement agency, which did not confirm that the job was a legitimate one. There were a few red flags. The placement agency?s IP address could be traced back to Bermuda and a lot of the language on its website was stolen from another law firm?s site, for two things. The agency also never met with the lawyers in person, of course.

Moss may be in for a hard road since the fake firm got both her personal information and her financial information, provided in order to get her her compensation for the legal work. It would help her if she had made this mistake while signed up for an identity theft protection plan. While she reported the issue to the credit reporting agencies, her bank and the Florida Bar Association, she could face some serious problems down the road.

With identity theft coverage, she could get instant alerts when it?s suspected that thieves are using her information. She could also receive compensation for some or all of the funds needed to recover her identity if it is used in a negative manner. Of course, she could have been more careful about how she handled applying for the ?job,? but everyone makes mistakes and that?s why we have people and policies to back us up.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu)? ? ESPN is coming to the University of California, Riverside on October 2, 2012, but aren?t making the trip to watch baseball, basketball or track and field. Instead, they are looking for UCR students who are interested in becoming a part of the multimedia sports and entertainment company.

In partnership with UC Riverside?s Career Center, a team of 11 representatives from Disney/ESPN/ABC, led by Joe Franco, ESPN?s manager of University Relations, will visit the campus to talk to students and present information about internships, entry-level job and career opportunities with ESPN. The team is made up of a large cross-section of departments, including content & media production, business & marketing and engineering & technology.

UC Riverside is one of four Southern California universities that ESPN will visit this fall.

?Despite the poor economy and difficult job climate, UC Riverside has continued to build its reputation among the state?s and nation?s employers, and as a result, we are attracting attention from key national employers,? Career Center Director Sean Gil said. ?Having ESPN on campus to recruit our students shows that we have the high-caliber students that a leading global employer seeks to hire.?

A general information session for interested students will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in Highlander Union Building room 302. It will feature a presentation about ESPN, a panel discussion and breakout sessions with representatives. The event is also open to staff and faculty.

In addition, ESPN will be hosting six ?special sessions? for students in specific sub-groups. These are:

  • 12:00 p.m. ?????? HUB 355 ????????? Business, Marketing, Math, and Statistics
  • 12:30 p.m. ?????? HUB 367 ????????? Student Athletes
  • 1:00 p.m. ???????? HUB 355 ????????? Spanish-language presentation targeting Spanish Speakers
  • 2:00 p.m.????????? HUB 367 ????????? Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology
  • 2:30 p.m. ???????? HUB 355 ????????? Radio, Film, TV, Journalism and Communications
  • 3:00 p.m. ???????? HUB 367 ????????? All Veterans

While the ESPN visit is special, there are many employers who visit UC Riverside through the Career Center over the course of a school year to help students network and discover career options. For example, in 2011-12, 298 employers visited the campus. In addition, more than 50% of UCR students accessed the center?s SCOTLink portal last year. The Career Center also hosts employer panels, tech talks, coffee chats, industry showcases, information sessions and company tours throughout the year.

White matter study shows brain capable of learning complex tasks well into adulthood

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Most people equate "gray matter" with the brain and its higher functions, such as sensation and perception, but this is only one part of the anatomical puzzle inside our heads. Another cerebral component is the white matter, which makes up about half the brain by volume and serves as the communications network.

The gray matter, with its densely packed nerve cell bodies, does the thinking, the computing, the decision-making. But projecting from these cell bodies are the axons -- the network cables. They constitute the white matter. Its color derives from myelin--a fat that wraps around the axons, acting like insulation.

Alex Schelgel, first author on a paper in the August 2012 Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, has been using the white matter as a landscape on which to study brain function. An important result of the research is showing that you can indeed "teach old dogs new tricks." The brain you have as an adult is not necessarily the brain you are always going to have. It can still change, even for the better.

"This work is contributing to a new understanding that the brain stays this plastic organ throughout your life, capable of change," Schlegel says. "Knowing what actually happens in the organization of the brain when you are learning has implications for the development of new models of learning as well as potential interventions in cases of stroke and brain damage."

Schlegel is a graduate student working under Peter Tse, an associate professor of psychological and brain sciences and a coauthor on the paper. "This study was Peter's idea," Schlegel says. "He wanted to know if we could see white matter change as a result of a long-term learning process. Chinese seemed to him like the most intensive learning experience he could think of."

Twenty-seven Dartmouth students were enrolled in a nine-month Chinese language course between 2007 and 2009, enabling Schlegel to study their white matter in action. While many neuroscientists use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in brain studies, Schlegel turned to a new MRI technology, called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). He used DTI to measure the diffusion of water in axons, tracking the communication pathways in the brain. Restrictions in this diffusion can indicate that more myelin has wrapped around an axon.

"An increase in myelination tells us that axons are being used more, transmitting messages between processing areas," Schlegel says. "It means there is an active process under way."

Their data suggest that white matter myelination is precisely what was seen among the language students. There is a structural change that goes along with this learning process. While some studies have shown that changes in white matter occurred with learning, these observations were made in simple skill learning and strictly on a "before and after" basis.

"This was the first study looking at a really complex, long-term learning process over time, actually looking at changes in individuals as they learn a task," says Schlegel. "You have a much stronger causal argument when you can do that."

The work demonstrates that significant changes are occurring in adults who are learning. The structure of their brains undergoes change.

"This flies in the face of all these traditional views that all structural development happens in infancy, early in childhood," Schlegel says. "Now that we actually do have tools to watch a brain change, we are discovering that in many cases the brain can be just as malleable as an adult as it is when you are a child or an adolescent."

Riot breaks out at Foxconn's Taiyuan plant, reportedly over guards beating up a worker

Foxconn's Taiyuan plant on riot

News just came in that workers at Foxconn's Taiyuan plant have started a riot in the wee hours in China, and that police forces are on site to control the crowd. While the motive isn't clear, Sina Weibo user Li Tian reports that the riot isn't related to the recent anti-Japan protests, though judging by his photos, much damage has been done in the process. The same site suffered from a strike back in March over salary dispute -- the front-line workers failed to receive the promised pay rise. On a similar note, Foxconn's Chengdu plant also had a riot in June, but that was apparently due to an argument between some workers and a local restaurant owner.

Update: We are seeing unofficial reports claiming the "2,000-people" riot was triggered by security guards hitting a worker at 10pm local time.

Update 2: According to a provincial website, Foxconn's Taiyuan industrial park focuses on magnesium alloy components for consumer electronics, heat conduction products, LED lighting products, mobile phone products and magnesium alloy automotive components.

Update 3: An undercover report from August mentioned that the Taiyuan plant processed the back casing of the iPhone 5. It also highlighted the company's harsh management as well as "practically compulsory" over-time work. We don't doubt that this riot escalated due to dissatisfaction over working conditions.

Update 4: Unsurprisingly, the original Sina Weibo posts have since been deleted. At the time of publication, the author had already noticed that some of the photos were already being censored by Sina. However, the photos over at Baidu Tieba are still intact.

Update 5: Well this is interesting. Foxconn has told Reuters that there was "a fight among workers from different production lines," but the company's spokesperson said they're "still investigating the cause of the fight and the number of people involved." An official statement will be released on Monday.

CHICAGO (AP) ? The Chicago Bears got back to winning, and they can thank their defense for that.

Major Wright returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown, and Chicago beat the St. Louis Rams 23-6 on Sunday.

The defense came to the rescue against the Rams (1-2), holding them to 160 yards and sacking Sam Bradford six times. That was enough on a day when Jay Cutler struggled, and the Bears (2-1) bounced back after an ugly loss to Green Bay the previous week.

The Bears had just kicked a field goal to extend their lead to 13-6 in the fourth quarter before Wright made his big play. Bradford had been hit hard by Israel Idonije and Stephen Paea on the previous play when Tim Jennings deflected a slant intended for Danny Amendola.

Wright caught the ball at the 45 and ran untouched to the end zone, making it a 14-point game and finally giving the Bears some breathing room.

It wasn't exactly the sort of showing they were looking for after that brutal 23-10 loss to the Packers, but it was good enough.

Cutler at least appeared to keep his composure in this game ? a big improvement after getting sacked seven times, throwing four interceptions and berating and bumping left tackle J'Marcus Webb on the sideline.

Otherwise, there weren't many positives for him.

Cutler completed 17 of 31 passes for 183 yards and was sacked twice and picked off once.

Brandon Marshall had trouble hanging onto the ball at times and wound up with five receptions for 71 yards after catching just two passes the previous week. Michael Bush ran for 55 yards and a touchdown with Matt Forte sidelined by a sprained right ankle.

Israel Idonije had 2? sacks for the Bears. Their strong defensive performance made for a miserable afternoon for Bradford, who was 18 of 35 for 152 yards with two interceptions.

Steven Jackson managed just 29 yards rushing after missing most of the previous game with a groin injury and sitting out practice during the week, and Amendola had five catches for 55 yards after tying a club record with 15 catches for 160 yards.

The Bears had 10 days to prepare for this, but instead of an inspired performance, they got a subpar effort from their offense.

When they had chances, they simply didn't take advantage. With Chicago leading by four early in the final quarter, a 21-yard scramble by Cutler put the ball on the 6. But the Bears settled for a field goal to make it 13-6 after he overthrew an open Devin Hester in the end zone, the ball going through the leaping receiver's hands.

That drew more groans from an already weary crowd.

Chicago's lone touchdown in the first half was aided by a big break, after Darian Stewart got called for roughing the passer on third down at the St. Louis 45. Bush eventually ran it in from the 3 with just under two minutes left to make it 10-0.

The Rams' Greg Zuerlein nailed a 56-yard field goal with 22 seconds left in the half and added a 46-yarder midway through the third to make it a four-point game.

Zimbabwe city residents synchronize toilet flush

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? City authorities in Zimbabwe's second largest city said Saturday they were appealing to home owners to flush their toilets at a specified time as a way to unblock sewers after days of severe water rationing.

Bulawayo City Council has asked its more than 1 million residents to flush their toilets simultaneously at 7:30 p.m. when water supplies are restored. City officials say "synchronized flushing" is needed to clear waste that would have accumulated in sanitary facilities which will have been affected by days of water outages.

Bulawayo's two main supply dams have been drying up because of drought conditions prevailing in the arid, southwestern part of Zimbabwe, raising fears of worsening water shortages before the rainy season starts in November.

Synchronized flushing was first introduced to Bulawayo two decades ago at the height of a drought that ravaged the southern African nation.

Residents told The Associated Press late Saturday that they weren't "aware" of the new system the city council was proposing. They said the whole issue wasn't properly communicated to them.

Old water pipes have not been replaced in years which saw world record inflation before the formation of a coalition government between longtime President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

Power and water outages are common in Zimbabwe following years of political turmoil and economic meltdown.

Civic organizations said any moves by city authorities to solve water and sanitation problems dogging the southwestern province were welcome, but were also awaiting communication from them.
