The Allure of the Squared Circle: My Fascination with Professional ...

?

I have been a fan of professional wrestling since I was four years old.? I am 20 years old now.? For the sixteen years that I have been a fan, people either look at me weird or they are excited to know that I am a fellow fan.? It?s either one extreme or the other.? Rarely has there ever been an in-between response (or ?tweener? as smart marks call it) when I bring up the topic of professional wrestling.? Regardless of the response I get, I am still a fan and I always enjoy discussing, arguing about and watching wrestling, because it is a major part of my life and it has been a huge influence on me.

?

I remember first discovering WWE (WWF as it was called back then).? I was four years old, watching Sesame Street in the living room with my parents and my brother.? My brother kept whining about wanting to change the channel.? My parents kept insisting that he sit through Sesame Street, but when I was done eating, they allowed him to do so.? So he clicked the remote to change the channel.? And that click changed my life forever.

?

I looked on the screen and saw a bald man with a mustache and beard, sporting black trunks, black kneepads and black boots.? I did not know his name at first.? But his character and the way he beat down his opponent drew me in as I stared at the TV screen.? After many mentions of his name by the commentators, I came to know that I was watching Stone Cold Steve Austin.? This was the wrestler who would become my role model.

?

From that point on, my interest in professional wrestling grew.? I would watch RAW IS WAR and eventually SmackDown every week, learn the names of the wrestlers, their characters, their moves etc.? This became the sport I would constantly talk about with friends.? While everyone else talked about baseball or football, and quoted RBIs, home runs, touchdowns or penalties, I talked about who became the World Champion at Wrestlemania.? I?m a huge Jets fan, but I can quote how many times Stone Cold won the World Championship before I can say how many passes Vinny Testaverde managed to complete.

?

Even though this was my favorite sport, I would go throughout childhood being made fun of for being a fan of ?fake wrestling? and ?watching two sweaty guys touch each other.?? To be honest, their teasing did not bother me, because I knew what I was watching, and even though it was not completely legitimate, it was still entertaining.? Also, I grew to know the trials and tribulations that wrestlers go through in order to make it in the business, and how some fall short, while others make it to the top.? This realization made me love wrestling even more, because I came to learn the dedication that it takes to become a pro wrestler and how that dedication must be maintained throughout their entire careers if they truly desire to be successful.

?

However, as cool as it is to watch wrestling on television or on the computer, there is absolutely nothing that compares to buying a ticket, traveling to the arena, sitting down with some good friends and family and watching the show live.? My first live wrestling event was WWE SmackDown in East Rutherford, New Jersey in November of 2003, shortly before Survivor Series.? I attended the event with my cousin, my uncle and my dad.? I remember the drive on the way to the Continental Airlines Arena (what is now known as the IZOD Center), talking with my cousin about the storylines, matches, etc.? We were ecstatic and could not wait to get into the building.? Once we got into the seating area, I immediately gazed at the entranceway where the fist was below the SmackDown logo and I was hooked.? I looked around and saw the thousands of fans in attendance and that made me even more pumped.? As soon as the SmackDown theme song ?I Want It All? hit and the fans started cheering, my cousin and I stood up and screamed along with them.? I was lost in the moment, as I had my fist in the air and my voice on maximum.? And once Kurt Angle?s music played, my cousin and I along with the rest of the crowd chanted ?You Suck!? along with the beat of the song.? We went on to have a great night watching some incredible entertainment.

?

Since then, I have attended many live shows from WWE events to various independent shows around my area.? It is a very special feeling being there live and interacting with thousands of fans who share the same interest in wrestling as me.? It is also very interesting talking with these fans and hearing some stories of their many pro wrestling escapades, such as meeting the wrestlers (which I, myself, have done), talking with the promoters or simply being involved in a crowd? brawl.? The wrestlers I have met are extremely down-to-earth and some of the most humble guys you will ever meet.? The promoters/owners that I have conversed with are very pleased to be talking with fans because they enjoy receiving feedback on the product, which is very respectable, because the fans are what drive the wrestling business.

?

Wrestling is such an interactive business and that is why I love it.? What makes it different from other sports is that it presents a blend of athletic competition and entertainment solely aimed at pleasing the fan.? It does not matter who wins or loses a match.? It does matter, however, how good the match is.? As long as both participants put forth their best effort in a match, or an entertainment segment, the fans are happy.? Pro wrestling has a certain magic, and that magic keeps bringing fans, including me, back for more.

Ultimate Fighter cast includes a former TUF coach and plenty of drama between Dana White and Roy Nelson

Nearly every season since the UFC created the reality series 'The Ultimate Fighter,' UFC president Dana White raves about the bouts and promises it will be the "best season ever." That's the promoter in him.

But as the 15th season is about to begin, White's focus is slightly different. The series, now known as 'The Ultimate Fighter Fridays,' seems to be as much about the battle between White and coach Roy Nelson as it is about the fighters or Nelson's upcoming fight with opposing coach Shane Carwin.

The series will return to the taped format on Sept. 14 with a two-hour special that will include all 16 fights to get into the house. The season features welterweight fighters, including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Cameron Diffley, who served as the jiu jitsu instructor when Forrest Griffin was the coach.

There have been plenty of times a fighter has fought on the show and then coached, but this might be the first time a man coached and then showed up as the contestant.

But the big news seems to be about the battles between White and the outspoken Nelson, the winner of Season 10.

"Carwin and Nelson are two guys who just can't stand each other and Roy and I haven't exactly seen eye to eye either," White said in a statement. "He's been a nightmare for me to work with on this show with all of his stupid b.s."

Nelson kicked things off in an interview with MMA Junkie in which he publicly blasted White. That is big news in and of itself, since so few of the UFC fighters are willing to take White on publicly.

Nelson, though, had no such qualms. He tore into White in an interview with MMA Junkie's Steven Marrocco.

It's probably because he wants to be a fighter, and he's not

Nelson continued to poke at White, painting himself as a guy looking to carry the sport to the next level.

I'm always at the back of the bus when it comes to the UFC. I'm just trying to further MMA to the next level, hold journalism up to higher standards, holding fights to higher standards, holding promotions to higher standards, holding athletic commissions to higher standards, and even holding the fans to higher standards.

White responded to Nelson following the UFC on Fox 4 card in Los Angeles, telling MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani that Nelson "is a huge pain in the [expletive]."

The dynamic between White and Nelson may wind up being the highlight of the season.

The 32 fighters who will compete on Sept. 14 for the 16 slots in the house and the chance at the UFC contract are:

8 Tips to Sell your Crafts Online | Hobbies On A Budget

spices and oils

A few years ago, if you wanted to profit from selling crafts, you would have to make your way to craft fairs and farmers markets. Nowadays however, most craft based entrepreneurs sell their wares online. And as the popularity of Etsy.com continues to explode, there has never been a better time to get into the game.

If you are?new to the idea of profiting from crafts, or you would simply like to increase your existing sales figures, here are eight tips that should point you in the right direction.

Sell on Multiple Websites

Etsy.com is considered number one when it comes to selling crafts online but it?s not the only game in town. Sites such as artfire.com, madeitmyself.com and bonanza.com are also well worth your time. Don?t limit yourself to a single marketplace. You never know where your next customer is going to come from.?

Take High Quality Photos

The quality of photos that you take can play a major role in the number of sales that you make. Though you don?t need to be an expert photographer, you do need to take reasonably high quality snaps. If your photos are low quality, many people are going to expect the same from your products.

Answer Questions ASAP

When somebody has a question, it?s usually because they are genuinely interested in purchasing something. It?s therefore essential to get back to them as soon as possible. If you wait too long, you are likely to lose the sale.

Packaging Matters

Just because your crafts are homemade, that does not mean that you can sell them in shoddy packaging. Your customers are far more likely to purchase from you again if your products arrive in neat little packets. Your brand, or name, should be included on the packaging and you should take some time to come up with a professional design.

Always Include a Note

Include a note with everything that you sell. It should include both when the product was created and any necessary instructions. You should also write a personal thank you at the end.

Don?t underestimate the importance of creating a personal connection between you and your customers. This is one of the reasons people love purchasing home made crafts.

Utilize Social Media

The value of a solid social media presence cannot be underestimated when it comes to selling crafts online. Your social media accounts should be heavily advertised wherever you sell your products. It?s also important to update your accounts regularly. Don?t be pushy however. Aim to be useful, not commercial.

Include a Free Gift

Consider including a small free gift with everything that you sell. Provided you choose wisely, doing so won?t cost you much. It will however help to get you noticed. Those who receive a free gift are both more likely to purchase from you again and more likely to tell their friends about you.

Charge for Quality

Finally, don?t undersell yourself. If you believe in the work that you do, you should charge accordingly. You are better off making a few sales at fifty dollars a piece than a lot of sales at five dollars a piece. Value yourself and your products. If you don?t, nobody else will.

High sustainability marks for Singapore real estate | Eco-Business.com

Bedok Mall and Bedok Residences are two of eight CapitaLand properties with a Platinum green building rating from BCA's Green Mark scheme. Image: CapitaLand.

Singapore real estate firm CapitaLand this year passed a new milestone on its path to sustainability, said senior managers at a Friday press briefing.

The firm, which officially started Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives in 2000, launched a review this month of its sustainability progress and policies.

Recent accomplishments include becoming one of only four Singapore-based firms to have its sustainability report verified by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the developer of the most widely used corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting framework.

GRI provides industry-specific guidelines for firms to voluntarily rate themselves on a range of ESG factors. Companies have the option of obtaining audits from independent sources and verification of their report rating by the GRI.

Deputy chief corporate officer Tan Seng Chai said the company, which has a ?B+? rating from GRI, would like to achieve the maximum ?A+? rating ? but not if it meant excluding parts of the firm?s international operations from its reports.

The GRI guidelines require data that is not readily available in some of the areas where CapitaLand operates, he explained. The firm plans to progressively improve all of its sites in the 20 countries where operates, and that process was more important than the GRI rating, he added.

According to a 2011 study from the non-profit organisation Singapore Compact, 79 out of 562 listed companies produced sustainability reports for that year. Only six of those firms had their reports externally audited and four obtained GRI verification.

The study found that sectors such as mining and agriculture, which face higher regulatory requirements, were more likely to produce sustainability reports than other sectors.

Singapore?s stock exchange introduced voluntary reporting guidance for its members last year to encourage more listed companies to report on their ESG performance.

Meanwhile, the national Building and Construction Agency (BCA) has been raising sustainability standards for the real estate sector since Singapore set a target in 2008 to bring 80 per cent of its buildings to green building standards by 2035.

The sector has improved its CSR performance tracking and reporting alongside its growing awareness of sustainable buildings.

The Singapore Compact study singled out Singapore-based property developers such as CapitaLand and City Developments Limited for their progress in CSR reporting and said they stood out for the quality of reporting in areas such as workforce figures, risk mitigation, environmental factors and Occupational Health and Safety.

In January, the two firms became the only Singaporean firms to make the Corporate Knights annual list of the ?Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations.

Both firms have committed to obtaining at least a GoldPlus rating from BCA?s green building scheme for new and refurbished ? or retrofitted ? properties. GoldPlus is the second highest green building rating and is two levels above the standard Green Mark.

CDL, which in July obtained a GRI verified ?A+? rating on its sustainability report for its Singapore operations, regularly shares its CSR reporting expertise with other companies at sustainability seminars and workshops to show the benefits of implementing and tracking CSR policies.

Certified green buildings saved the firm and its customers about S$19.7 million in electricity costs for each year between 2008 and 2011, according to CDL data for 37 of its buildings.

CDL managing director Kwek Leng Joo said in a statement at the report?s release that efforts to spread awareness of sustainability within the industry were paying off.

?We are heartened to see increased interest and acceptance from our business peers and industry stakeholders, cognisant of the need to address more than just financial performance,? he added.

Parents overwhelmed by reference book chaos ? TalkVietnam

While the publishing of textbooks is monopolised by the Education Publishing House, the reference books market is a lucrative market for many publishing companies.

Parents bewildered by the choice

Parents bewildered by the choice

Most of the reference books plagiarise each other, and only vary based on appearance. Many book stores in Hanoi provide discounts from 10-30%, some even lower the prices by 50% to attract customers.

A parent shared, ?When I was looking for a reference book for my third grade nephew and niece, I found dozens of books from different publishing houses. However most of them have the same content and some even had wrong information. The book stores make money either way.?

At the book stores at 45B Ly Thuong Kiet Street, Hue is having difficulties in choosing books for her fifth grade child.

?It?s lucky that I?ve done some research before. Though most people don?t seem to like the books written by southern authors, I think their books are easy to understand. Of course, I only select books from credible publishing houses and university lecturers.?

According to a bookseller, the books receive a rudimentary inspection before going on sale.

Most of the book stores in Hanoi still prioritise northern authors, however, the southern publishing houses have opened their agencies in the north recently and provide a great deal of books to the market.

Pham Thi Yen, Headmaster of Thanh Cong B Primary School said, ?It?s kind of hard now to choose from so many books. There are so many reference books that contain the wrong information. This is not something new because these books in reality are mostly written by only one or two authors.?

Yen further advise parents to choose books for children carefully.

Ngo Tran Ai, Head of Education Publishing Houses said, ?There are a lot of books that have the wrong information in them because the education book market is not control by any state agency. But more importantly, some publishing houses don?t control the books as they co-operate with their partners or don?t necessarily fully inspect the books.?

He also said parents should buy reference books by authors who also write text books, famous and credible authors and seek advice from schools and teachers.

?Most schools will give advice to parents when it comes to choosing books. Parents should consult with teachers before buying reference books.? Yen said. ?The books with the least mistakes are written by lecturers of National University of Education.?

Summer Riding

Summer time can be one of the best times of the year to hang out at the barn - it can also be the hottest. Here are some simple solutions to those hot weather complaints that you may say or hear from other horse owners.

There are too many flies and insects.

The most obvious answer to this would be to break out the fly spray and spray your horse all over. There are so many different types of fly sprays out there. You have to test different kinds to see what works best for your budget and your horse. There will always be those bugs that never seem to leave no matter what you use to prevent them.

If you do decide to ride when there are a lot of insects out, you can put a fly mask over his bridle. This will help him to focus on his job rather than shake his head around to avoid the bugs.
You can also try and ride at times when the bugs are less active such as the early morning or evening. Flies are out more during the day whereas mosquitoes come out at night time.

There are several preventatives you can take to help keep your barn and pastures fly-free. Try and remove as much manure, standing water and other waste materials from around the barn and pastures as possible. You can also set up fly traps around the barn to help collect those pesky bugs.

There is so many other people and kids at the barn.

If you board your horse at another farm you have probably noticed that there has been a jump in the population at the barn during the day. Since school has been let out and the other boarders might be off of work or preparing for show season, the barn might seem packed and busy. Now all of a sudden the riding ring is packed and you seem to be waiting in line to even hose off your horse.

One good thing about avoiding flies and heat is also avoiding crowds. If you can try and get to the barn early, there you may find peace and quiet and no lines. Most people don't want to get up early on their summer vacation or their days off. Some people also don't find it easy to get a ride in before work either. So if you can manage to crawl out of bed early enough, then do it. If not, wait until later in the evening when the crowd seems to die down.

If your barn is home to summer camps, then this will add a whole new light on barn traffic. Talk to the barn manager to see what times and days the summer camps are. Ask what areas are reserved for the summer campers and if there will be a ring available for the boarders to ride in while the summer camp is in session.

If you are free during the summer, you might even be able to help out with the summer camp in exchange for money off of your board or a riding lesson or two. Even if you can't help every day of the summer camp, there still may be need for an extra set of hands.

It's way too hot to ride.

Every single day of summer, you will hear someone say "it's too hot to ride" or "it's not hot, it's just humid". You have to remember that humidity can be more dangerous than the heat. Humidity can compromise both you and your horse's ability to regulate our internal temperatures. Watch the weather and see what the temperature is going to be as well as what the temperature is going to feel like with the humidity.

You can still get rides in when it's hot; just wait for the sun to go down. Once the sun is down, the temperature goes down too making the temperature more tolerable and less humid. See if you can get a group of friends together and go for a trail ride. Even if you can't ride in the arena, you can always take your horse for a ride through the woods. It is always a big cooler in the shade.

If you have a lake, a pond or a stream near your barn, take you and your friends for a swim on horseback. Your horse may find that splashing around in the water feels cool and refreshing.

If you can't seem to find a good time to go to the barn when it's not crowded, sometimes the best option is to join in. If your barn seems to be overflowing with people, you can probably find a riding partner to ride with. Knowing that you have some friends at the barn waiting for you might give you some motivation to go ride.

Precisely What Outdoor Patios Are Perfect For

by Louie Dale
Send Feedback to Louie Dale
Request Reprint | Print | About Author | Report Problem | Tweet This There are a lot of people in South Africa that like to invite friends around for a braai and also to entertain family. There are a few choices when it comes to doing this type of thing. Let us have a look at what good patios are when it comes to entertaining family and friends.

The best thing about patios is that you can have a covered, enclosed or even open outdoor patio. Which means that, based on your preferences, you can entertain any way you like to do so without having to build costly extensions to your home just for an entertainment room. If you get the correct type of cover for your outdoor patio then you can change from a covered and open outdoor patio with ease.

If you happen to have an enclosed patio you will then be in a position to entertain outside of your home most of the year. The actual walls of the outdoor patio will protect your guests from the wind and cold of winter as well as from the sun of summer time. If it is a little too cold then you simply need to start up the braai or perhaps a heater and everything is going to be fine again.

The thing that patios are perfect for is keeping individuals out of your home and in an entertainment area. It makes cleaning up after a party a lot easier for all concerned. You will not have individuals walking all over your carpets and rugs, they will most ly sit in their seats and socialise with each other. They will need to go indoors to go to the restroom now and then, but they would have to from time to time any way.

The long and the short of it is that you really should look into having a patio if you do not already have one. Chances are it will make entertaining much easier. You will not need to bother about where you are going to seat everybody or where you are going to eat as well as prepare food. You can just do everything in the kitchen as well as on the outdoor patio. You can even braai on the patio with out getting your home filled with smoke.

Sell corn and beans sooner rather than later: Purdue University economist

A Purdue University economist says farmers may be better selling their corn and soybeans now than storing in hopes of higher prices later.

In most cases, farmers should skip storage and take their grain directly to the elevator, Corinne Alexander said in a Purdue release.

"From an economics perspective, in short crop years one of the things we tend to see is that prices peak early, either before or during harvest, and then decline through the remainder of the marketing year," Alexander said. "The market is giving a strong signal to farmers to deliver early and at harvest because storage will not be profitable. This is true for both corn and soybeans."

Farmers considering waiting out the market for even higher prices could be leaving money on the table if they put their grain in a bin, Alexander said. Prices are likely to come down in the first quarter of 2013 as South American farmers harvest their corn and soybeans and provide some relief for stressed world stocks, she said.

There are only two reasons farmers should store grain in a short crop year, Alexander said.

"Those would include livestock producers who are supplying their own feed or producers who have contracts with either food or ethanol processors where the contract specifies a later delivery date," she said.

In the same release, Purdue grain quality specialist? Richard Stroshine said storing grain could present a host of challenges this fall, including drydown methods, mould, leftover fine material in bins and insects.

Turkey probes possible Iran link in bombing

ISTANBUL (AP) ? Turkey has said it is investigating whether another country, possibly Iran, was involved in an explosion that killed nine people near Syria earlier this week. The announcement reflects concern about spillover from the war in Syria as well as increasing tension with Iran, a regional power that supports Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Turkey blamed a Kurdish rebel group, the PKK, for the attack in the southern city of Gaziantep. In a separate incident near the Iraqi border, Turkish media reported Thursday that five soldiers and 16 Kurdish militants died in a nighttime ambush of a military convoy and an ensuing operation by security forces.

Some Turkish officials allege there are links between the PKK, which denied it carried out the bombing, and Syrian intelligence. Turkey backs the Syrian opposition in its war with forces loyal to Assad, and relations between Ankara and Damascus have sharply deteriorated since the conflict began in March 2011.

In an interview Wednesday night with CNN-Turk television, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc left open the possibility that Iran might be a culprit in Monday's bombing near a police station in Gaziantep.

"It's not just about Syria ? connected to it or limited to it," Arinc said. "All foreign elements who may be involved in our geography."

Asked if that included Iran, he said: "It could be Iran, it could be here or it could be there."

Turkey and Iran have expanded trade in past years and tamped down their traditional rivalry, but sharp differences over the Syrian conflict as well as Turkey's decision to host a NATO radar that would send a warning if Iran fires missiles have led to increasingly tense rhetoric on both sides.

Hossein Naghavi, spokesman for Iran's parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy, suggested that Turkey was jeopardizing its own security with its Syria policy and that the bombing in Gaziantep was the result of "terrorist groups" that were reacting to its position.

"Turkey is now facing an internal crisis and it would be better for it to solve its own domestic problems rather than intervening and expressing hostile remarks" against Syria, Naghavi said Tuesday in remarks carried by ICANA, the news website of the Iranian parliament.

In July, Turkish media reported that a dozen people suspected of links to the al-Qaida network were detained in southern cities, including Gaziantep. U.S. officials and others worry that Syria could become a new foothold for insurgents inspired by al-Qaida who are currently fighting on the opposition's side.

In an analysis published just before the Gaziantep bombing, Stratfor, a U.S. research center, said Turkey faced the possibility of a backlash.

"If Ankara is expanding its involvement in Syria, it will do so in a measured fashion because it?will be fearful of pushback from the Syrian regime and Iran via the Kurds," the report said.

Which telescopes could lose out in astronomy's big budget crunch?

Federal budget pressures in the US could force the organization that runs publicly funded observatories to divest itself of six telescopes. The list points to new priorities in astronomy.?

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / August 23, 2012

For astronomers in the United States it's d?j? vu with a wrenching twist ? the possible closure of some of the most heavily used observatories the federal government funds.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

In 1995, the prospect of flat federal science budgets prompted calls to privatize or close workhorses such as the Kitt Peak Observatory near Tuscon, Ariz. That would ease the squeeze on other big-ticket observatory projects in the pipeline, the argument went.

Seventeen years later, telescopes at Kitt Peak, which avoided previous appointments with a broker, are again the budgetary bulls-eye.

This time the fiscal picture is far more bleak, and the projects in the pipeline are more ambitious. Thus, a panel advising the National Science Foundation (NSF) has recommended that the agency writing the checks for publicly supported observatories divest itself of six facilities as quickly as possible over the next four years.

The goal is to ensure enough federal research dollars to allow the US to participate in high-priority observatory projects through the end of the decade and have enough money left to supply research grants astronomers and their grad students need to use the new telescopes.

Aside from Kitt Peak's three largest telescopes, the divest-it list includes a gleaming white, 328-foot-diameter radio telescope at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Greenbank, W. Va., facility ? dedicated 12 years ago and built at a cost of nearly $60 million. Four other scientifically productive telescopes or telescope arrays scopes are on the list as well.

Grappling with the issue wasn't easy, notes Debra Fischer, a Yale University astronomer who served on the advisory panel making the recommendations. Federally funded observatories serve as portals to the universe for a large number of astronomers who don't populate the faculties of universities with fiscal angels or pockets sufficiently deep to build their own observatories.

Still, "at the end of the day, I feel like we're protecting science for the next generation, even though it hurts right now," she says.

At their broadest, the recommendations reflect two fundamental but related changes in astronomy.

One is the move into what University of Wisconsin astronomer Jay Gallagher as well as others have called the era of "big science."

The easy questions about the birth and evolution of the universe from its grandest to its smallest scales have been answered. The remaining questions are tougher. They require bigger telescopes in space and on the ground to spot the most distant, hence fainest, objects. And they require increasingly sophisticated instruments bolted to the back ends of those telescopes to help astronomers convert that faint light into answers.

The bigger the telescope, the bigger the price tag.

(AP) ? Over six frightening months, a deadly germ untreatable by most antibiotics spread in the nation's leading research hospital. Pretty soon, a patient a week was catching the bug. Scientists at the National Institutes of Health locked down patients, cleaned with bleach, even ripped out plumbing ? and still the germ persisted.

By the end, 18 people harbored the dangerous germ, and six died of bloodstream infections from it. Another five made it through the outbreak only to die from the diseases that brought them to NIH's world-famous campus in the first place.

It took gene detectives teasing apart the bacteria's DNA to solve the germ's wily spread, a CSI-like saga with lessons for hospitals everywhere as they struggle to contain the growing threat of superbugs.

It all stemmed from a single patient carrying a fairly new superbug known as KPC ? Klebsiella pneumoniae that resists treatment by one of the last lines of defense, antibiotics called carbapenems.

"We never want this to happen again," said Dr. Tara Palmore, deputy hospital epidemiologist at the NIH Clinical Center.

Infections at health care facilities are one of the nation's leading causes of preventable death, claiming an estimated 99,000 lives a year. They're something of a silent killer, as hospitals fearful of lawsuits don't like to publicly reveal when they outfox infection control ? yet no hospital is immune.

Wednesday, government researchers published an unusually candid account of last year's outbreak, with some advice: Fast sequencing of a germ's genome, its full DNA, may be essential. It can reveal how drug-resistant bacteria are spreading so that doctors can protect other patients.

"This is not an easy story to tell," said Dr. Julie Segre, a senior investigator at NIH's National Human Genome Research Institute. She led the genetic sleuthing that found the bug hiding in sink drains and, most chilling, even in a ventilator that had been cleaned with bleach.

Infection-control specialists at other hospitals called this detailed anatomy of an outbreak, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, important to share.

"They were able to demonstrate that this sneaky little bug was able to stay alive and get transmitted in ways they hadn't quite predicted before they had the detailed genetic information," said Dr. Sara Cosgrove, associate hospital epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University. "It's very revealing."

"Absolutely this could happen in any hospital," said Dr. Deverick Anderson, co-director of a Duke University infection control network that advises smaller community hospitals.

"This is really exciting stuff, cutting-edge technology, to try and better understand how these infections get spread," he added. That in turn may lead to new protections, important because "there's something that's very, very wrong about going to a hospital and becoming more ill."

Normally, the Klebsiella bacteria live in human intestines and don't harm people with healthy immune systems. But the multidrug-resistant strain named KPC has emerged over the past decade to become a fast-growing threat in intensive care units, spreading easily between very ill people and killing half of those it sickens. Worse, people can carry KPC without symptoms unless the germs slip into the urinary tract or bloodstream ? theirs or the person's in the next bed ? through a catheter or surgical wound.

The 243-bed NIH Clinical Center, in Washington's suburbs, is a unique hospital, only treating people enrolled in government research studies.

So on June 13, 2011, a research nurse carefully checked the medical records as a New York City hospital transferred a study participant who had become critically ill with a rare lung disease. The nurse found that the patient had KPC as well.

The woman went into strict isolation: Everyone entering her room donned a protective gown and gloves and rigorously washed their hands. Her medical equipment got special decontamination. All other patients in the ICU had their throats and groins tested regularly to see if the bug was spreading.

All seemed OK. The woman recovered, and went home on July 15.

Fast forward three weeks. Now a man with cancer has KPC despite never crossing paths with Patient No. 1. Ten days later, a woman with an immune disease fell ill, too. Both died of the infection.

Did they arrive carrying their own KPC bacteria, or did that first patient's germ somehow escape into the hospital? Standard tests couldn't tell. Segre, the geneticist, turned to DNA.

As bacteria multiply, mistakes appear and are repaired in their genetic code. Sequencing that genome allowed Segre to follow differences in single genetic letters like a trail of the germ's transmission and evolution.

Sure enough, the KPC originated from the New York patient despite NIH's precautions. Testing bacteria from the 17 additional patients who ultimately caught it shows the KPC was transmitted three separate times from Patient No. 1, and then spread more widely.

Even this sophisticated technology couldn't prove exactly how transmission occurred. But it turns out that Patient 3 had been in the ICU at the same time as the New York woman and really was the next infected, silently carrying the bug longer before becoming sick. That was enough time for Patient 3's infection to spread to Patient 2, who just got sick faster.

Meanwhile, NIH was making big changes. All the ICU patients underwent more invasive testing, using rectal swabs, to check for silent germ carriers. A new wall created a separate ICU to house them. Doctors, nurses, even janitors assigned there could work nowhere else, and monitors were paid to make sure everyone followed infection-control rules.

Yet a patient a week was either becoming infected or found to be a silent carrier of the same KPC strain.

"Honestly, we were very scared at that point," Segre recalled.

Test after test never found the bug on hospital workers' hands. Tainted objects like the ventilator couldn't be ruled out ? but NIH adopted more complex and expensive decontamination, using robot-like machines to spray germ-killing hydrogen peroxide into the tiniest of crevices in all affected rooms and equipment.

Still, November brought more bad news: The outbreak strain had escaped the ICU, as two patients who'd never been there now were carrying it. A new isolation room was built, and all 200-plus patients in the hospital started undergoing rectal testing.

The outbreak now is over, the last carrier found in December. But NIH isn't dropping its guard. The isolation room remains, used every time one of the seven outbreak survivors returns to the hospital for their ongoing research studies ? because they still carry the strain. Those rectal tests continue, hospital-wide once a month, to be sure no new KPC strain sneaks in.

Bacterial sequencing is becoming fast and cheap enough for most large hospitals to use during tough outbreaks, said Dr. Lance Peterson, microbiology and infectious disease director at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, Ill.

But another lesson is how much it takes to guard against these bugs sneaking in in the first place. Peterson said his hospital does weekly rectal testing of every ICU patient as a precaution.

"There's better technology becoming available for your hospital to prevent these bacteria from spreading, and this is what you should expect from your hospital," he said.
