RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu)? ? ESPN is coming to the University of California, Riverside on October 2, 2012, but aren?t making the trip to watch baseball, basketball or track and field. Instead, they are looking for UCR students who are interested in becoming a part of the multimedia sports and entertainment company.

In partnership with UC Riverside?s Career Center, a team of 11 representatives from Disney/ESPN/ABC, led by Joe Franco, ESPN?s manager of University Relations, will visit the campus to talk to students and present information about internships, entry-level job and career opportunities with ESPN. The team is made up of a large cross-section of departments, including content & media production, business & marketing and engineering & technology.

UC Riverside is one of four Southern California universities that ESPN will visit this fall.

?Despite the poor economy and difficult job climate, UC Riverside has continued to build its reputation among the state?s and nation?s employers, and as a result, we are attracting attention from key national employers,? Career Center Director Sean Gil said. ?Having ESPN on campus to recruit our students shows that we have the high-caliber students that a leading global employer seeks to hire.?

A general information session for interested students will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in Highlander Union Building room 302. It will feature a presentation about ESPN, a panel discussion and breakout sessions with representatives. The event is also open to staff and faculty.

In addition, ESPN will be hosting six ?special sessions? for students in specific sub-groups. These are:

  • 12:00 p.m. ?????? HUB 355 ????????? Business, Marketing, Math, and Statistics
  • 12:30 p.m. ?????? HUB 367 ????????? Student Athletes
  • 1:00 p.m. ???????? HUB 355 ????????? Spanish-language presentation targeting Spanish Speakers
  • 2:00 p.m.????????? HUB 367 ????????? Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology
  • 2:30 p.m. ???????? HUB 355 ????????? Radio, Film, TV, Journalism and Communications
  • 3:00 p.m. ???????? HUB 367 ????????? All Veterans

While the ESPN visit is special, there are many employers who visit UC Riverside through the Career Center over the course of a school year to help students network and discover career options. For example, in 2011-12, 298 employers visited the campus. In addition, more than 50% of UCR students accessed the center?s SCOTLink portal last year. The Career Center also hosts employer panels, tech talks, coffee chats, industry showcases, information sessions and company tours throughout the year.
