Cano feels the love during red carpet parade

On the day Mariano Rivera won MVP honors in his final All-Star Game, it was only fitting that Robinson Cano ? who was named after the most famous No. 42 of all-time ? started his All-Star day parading down 42^nd Street.

Cano took part in Major League Baseball?s Red Carpet parade Tuesday afternoon, which saw each All-Star driven in red, white and blue Chevy pickup trucks from Bryant Park down to 42^nd Street and Third Avenue.

(Yes, that's me on the back of the truck with Cano. No, I wasn't serving as his bodyguard; I was invited to take the ride down 42nd Street with him to chronicle the event, which turned out to be a pretty cool angle to watch from.)

Fans lined both sides of the street, many dressed in pinstriped No. 24 jerseys, cheering for the Yankees? second baseman as he rolled by with three members of his family; father Jose, mother Claribel and eight-year-old brother Gregory.

Many fans shouted their wishes for the five-time All-Star to remain in the Bronx after his current contract expires. Cano declined to discuss his status as a free-agent-to-be, but he admitted that hearing the support from the fans certainly made Tuesday?s parade a memorable one for him.

?To see how much the fans here love you, it was nice; I really enjoyed it,? Cano told the Daily News. ?It?s nice to hear that the fans want you back, that they appreciate the way you play the game.?

Cano enjoyed his All-Star experience much more this week than he did a year ago in Kansas City, where he was a constant target of local fans? ire after he opted not to include Royals DH Billy Butler on the AL?s Home Run Derby squad.

?I understood what happened last year,? Cano said. ?This year, to be in New York, it was nice. To come up here and be able to spend this time with your family, to have them there with you, that?s what matters most.?

Tuesday?s parade marked the first time Gregory - who lives in the Dominican Republic and was making his first trip to the United States ? has been along for the ride, something his big brother seemed to soak in as they rode the red carpet.

?I know it?s a great experience for him,? Cano said. ?He may not realize it now because he?s young, but he plays baseball, too. When he grows up and sees the videos of this kind of stuff, he?ll probably be impressed that he was there.?
