LIMERICK ? The backstory heading into tonight?s PAC-10 girls? championship game was similar to last night?s.
Spring-Ford had handily beaten Methacton twice this season already, and unlike last night?s contest, tonight?s was no different than the regular season meetings. Spring-Ford had few problems dispatching Methacton tonight in their 53-23 championship win.
Spring-Ford jumped on Methacton early using a swarming defense and spread-out team scoring to take a 14-4 first quarter lead.
The second quarter was a bit different. Methacton used two three-pointers and 5-6 free throw shooting to go into the half down only 19-15.
?We had to cut down on fouls, and play with our feet,? Spring-Ford coach Jeff Rinehimer said about his approach coming out of halftime. ?Getting in your position, getting your hand on the ball (means a lot).?
The Rams were certainly able to execute and have their way with Methacton, as they outscored the Warriors 34-8 during the half.
?We lost to a great team. They turned the pressure up in the second half,? Methacton coach Craig Kaminski said after the game.
?We started to panic, got frustrated, and got out of our game plan,? he said.
?I?ll take runner-up over the bleachers any day,? he said about his team?s reaction to the loss. ?We?re still proud of ourselves.?
Kaminski spoke with an optimistic tone about heading into their playoff game Saturday. He said, ?We?ll learn from it. We have about 48 hours before we have Council Rock North. We?ll be ready. We?re not going to lose any sleep.?
Sarah Sherman and Jenna Carroll led the Warriors with six points apiece. Sarah Payonk paced Spring-Ford with 14.
The top-seeded Rams take on William Tennent at home Saturday at 1:30. Methacton?s match against Council Rock North is at home and scheduled for 1:30 as well.
Mount claims title over Villa Maria
If anyone thought that Alex Louin and Mount Saint Joseph?s were going to let Villa Maria beat them two consecutive years in the ACAA final, they had another thing coming.
Top-seeded Mount downed Villa 57-41 in the AACA conference final. Led by Louin?s 18-point performance, Mount played solid defense and hit timely three-pointers to take control of the game in the second quarter. Although Villa never completely went away, it was clear from early on that it was the Magic?s title to lose and they played that way.
Both teams seemed a bit over-excited in the first quarter, missing many shots and turning the ball over a lot. Mount depended on Louin heavily in that first eight minutes as the junior notched eight of her team?s 11 points in the period. While the rest of the squad was getting their legs under them on the big stage, Louin stayed cool a produced enough to give Mount a five-point lead heading into the second.
The second quarter was the turning point in the game. Although Louin carried the Magic in the opening period, some of her teammates jumped into the fray. The combination of a couple three-balls and three point plays, along with great defense, powered Mount to give it a nine-point cushion going into halftime. Meg Geatens exploded for seven of her 12 total points in the period, including two converted and-ones. The Magic blasted Villa on the boards, making life miserable in the paint.
Although Villa opened the third with a 7-2 run, they could not hold down Mount for long. Once again, the Magic got big baskets from Geatens and senior Adrienne Cellucci to hold off any further dent in their lead. At the end of the period, Mount was still up eight points.
